HOLLYWOOD, CA – The 2015 Hollywood Film Festival culminated under a Blood Red moon on the outdoor patio of Arclight Cinemas in Hollywood, with a celebration highlighting the top films in six categories.  The festival stayed true to its exciting global direction and its "See Good / Do Good / Feel Good" mission anchored in social impact under its new team:  CEO & Executive Producer Brad Parks and Executive Director Rod Beaudoin.

Best Narrative Feature was split between two films.

Forward. Side. Close! / Austria (Director: Alexander Peter Lercher) tells the story of a neurotic cynic who suffers from obsessive compulsive behaviors and lives in a remote castle with his two servants. His life undergoes a dramatic restructuring when his excitable friend surprises him on his 70th birthday weekend with the intention of turning his life upside down.

Waffle Street, / US (Director: Eshom Nelms, Ian Nelms)  The true story of Jimmy Adams, a V.P. of a $30 billion hedge fund, who loses his job and winds up working as a waiter at a waffle shop. Amidst the greasy madness of the 24-hour diner, Jimmy befriends Edward, an ex-con grill master who serves up hard lessons about life, finance, and grits.

Best Documentary Feature: Among the Believers  / Pakistan, US - (Director: Hemal Trivedi, Mohammed Ali Naqvi) An unsettling and eye opening exploration into the spread of the radical Islamic school Red Mosque in Pakistan, which trains legions of children to devote their lives to jihad, or holy war, from a very young age.

Best Narrative Short: Pony / US  (Director: Candice Carella) Claudia, a hardworking single mom, has to go out of town on an important last minute business trip, forcing her to leave her 5 year old daughter, Miko with uncle Jeff, a rock musician in his 50's who is still running on fumes of his glory days.

Best Documentary Short: The Birth of an Artist/ Ukraine (Director: Natasha Babenko) A short documentary about a disabled Ukrainian girl who, despite all the odds, lives the life of a prolific artist.

Emerging Filmmaker went to Alexander Peter Lercher, Director of Forward. Side. Close! And Candice Carella, Director of PONY.

Best Social Impact Film went to Right Footed / USA (Director: Nick Spark) Jessica Cox was born without arms as a result of a birth defect, but managed to overcome many physical and emotional challenges to become fully independent. She learned to type with her toes, drive a car with her feet, and amazingly -- fly an airplane with her feet. Right Footed follows Jessica as she transforms from a motivational speaker to a mentor, and eventually into a leading advocate for people with disability.

“The response to our social impact direction and focus from the Hollywood community and major companies worldwide has been overwhelming,” says Brad Parks.  “Our mission of “See Good / Do Good / Feel Good” has been well received and our programming and success mirrors that.  I look forward to taking this vision global this year and in years to come.”

“Hollywood attracts amazing story tellers,” adds Rod Beaudoin. “We are lucky to have showcased some of the best in the world of social impact filmmaking this year.  We will continue to program these films which are, at their core, in the line with our mission while providing first-class entertainment to the entertainment capital of the world.”

Filmmakers vying for £30,000 are heading to Cardiff for 2015 Iris Prize festival

The world’s largest short film prize is a whopping £30,000 and is presented annually in Cardiff to the Best LGBT short film as decided by an independent jury, chaired this year by popular actress Lynn Hunter.

The Iris Prize, known to film aficionados as the Gay Short Film Oscars, is now in its 9th year and to some the best kept secret Cardiff has, opens on Wednesday 7 October.

As the organisers prepare for the 10th anniversary in 2016, they are determined that the 2015 festival will also make a mark! Taking place at the same time as the Rugby World Cup, the festival’s opening night film is a documentary called Scrum, which follows the trials and tribulations of three men competing during the Bingham Cup – the gay rugby world cup.

The fresh new slogan adopted by the festival team dictates “Watch films. Party nightly. Repeat.” - this is possibly why the festival is popular with both film makers and members of the public, with attendances last year hitting 7,000.

“Access to the film makers is a big part of the Iris appeal,” Festival Director Berwyn Rowlands feels.

“We have an access all areas policy, which basically means members of the public have easy access to the talent attending the festival. The VIP area is shared by everyone – because we don’t have one – every part of the festival is VIP and open to the public,” he added.

2015 is proving to be another popular year for attracting talent to Cardiff, with film makers attending from all over the world. These are just some of the film makers who will introducing their films at screenings in Cardiff:

Christopher Plummer to receive a Joseph Plateau Honorary Award at Film Fest Gent

On Wednesday 14 October, Christopher Plummer will receive the Joseph Plateau Honorary Award at the 42nd Film Fest Gent. With this accolade, the festival honours guests who have made a special contribution to the art of filmmaking. “If there is one actor deserving of the Joseph Plateau Award then it is this immensely versatile and talented Canadian icon", claims the festival’s artistic director, Patrick Duynslaegher. Film Fest Gent will also screen 'Remember' the latest film by Atom Egoyan, starring Christopher Plummer.

Patrick Duynslaegher: "If you browse through Plummer’s overwhelming filmography on IMDb you get slightly dizzy at his no less than 204 credits, which include live TV, television series, TV films, feature films, plays on Broadway and London’s West End and voice overs in animated films and video games. Plummer is also one of the nine actors to have received the highest distinctions in the worlds of film (Oscar), television (Emmy) and theatre (Tony Award). A few highlights from his filmography include: ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’, ‘Beginners’, ‘The Last Station’, ‘A Beautiful Mind’, ‘The Sound of Music’. Although blessed with the instantly recognisable face of a character actor, he is a genuine chameleon who steps into the shoes of the most diverse range of historic and mythical characters."

In 'Remember', the latest film from his fellow countryman Atom Egoyan, who presented 'Devil's Knot' and 'The Captive' at the 41st Film Fest Gent, Plummer plays a Nazi hunter plagued by dementia. He does it with a precision and finesse that make it abundantly clear how much he still enjoys his work, and that he has no intention of giving up his passion just yet.

Joseph Plateau Honorary Award Ceremony on Wednesday 14 October at 14:00 in Ghent
To attend rsvp to elisa@filmfestival.be

The 42nd Film Fest Gent runs from 13 tot 24 October in Kinepolis Gent, Studio Skoop, Sphinx, Vooruit, KASKcinema, Music Centre Bijloke and Kuipke. Info and tickets on www.filmfestival.be.

- Audience Award for Best Feature Film: Room

- Audience Award for Best Documentary Film: Romeo Is Bleeding

Aspen Film announced today its balloted Audience Award winners for the 37th Aspen Filmfest, which ran Sept. 25-30 at Paepcke Auditorium and the Isis Theater in Aspen and the Crystal Theatre in Carbondale. Two awards - one for narrative and one for documentary - were named as the best films by Aspen Filmfest audience. Room, directed by Lenny Abrahamson, was chosen to receive the Audience Award for Best Feature Film and Romeo Is Bleeding directed by Jason Zeldes, was chosen to receive the Audience Award for Best Documentary Film.

"This year, we are honored to present the awards on behalf of our audience to two films that while difficult in subject matter, find the real beauty of humanity - even under the most harrowing of circumstances," said Aspen Film Artistic Director Maggie Mackay.

Timed to the spectacular fall color in the Rocky Mountains, Aspen Film presented a six-day showcase of independent and big-screen cinema featuring 23 features and documentaries from around the world - punctuated by filmmaker guests, in-depth discussions and education programming for Aspen High School, Carbondale Middle School, Carbondale Community School, Glenwood High School and Rifle High School.

ABOUT THE WINNING FILMS:

Room (dir. Lenny Abrahamson, Ireland/Canada, 2015)

Romeo Is Bleeding (dir. Jason Zeldes, USA, 2015)

Donté Clark is on a mission to combat his hometown's gang violence with poetry. As Clark and his high-school students delve into an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, real-life and fictional tragedies begin to overlap. This portrait of a young man struggling to give voice as well as hope to a hurting community is as inspiring as it is absorbing

ICFF “Manaki Brothers” and the official partner Vip operator announced the awards of the 36th edition of the festival tonight. The “Golden Camera 300” went to the cinematographer Mátyás Erdély for the film “Son of Saul”. “This film offers a new way of storytelling; on one hand we are facing the main character’s psychology, while on the other hand we were witnessing the dreads of the holocaust” – with these words, the jury of the Official Program chose the best cinematography, announcing it at tonight’s awards ceremony in the Center of Culture in Bitola.
The “Silver Camera 300” went to Adam Arkapaw for the film “Macbeth”, for the extraordinary skill to put new technologies in service of Shakespeare’s classical drama. The “Bronze Camera 300” went to Mateo Guzman for the film “Land and shade”, for representing rural America with poetic and magical realism in a way rarely witnessed on film.

The jury consisted of: Ryszard Lenczewski - president, Bozidar - Bota Nikoloc, Hayet Benkara, ErcanKesal and Mitko Panov. The jury also presented Morteza Gheidi with a Special Mention for the film "Nahid". The jury emphasized the cinematographic talent of Vladan Radovic as well, for the film "Black souls".
Best film in the "New European Cinema" program is "Rams" directed by Grimur Hokanarson. This project will also receive 10.000 euros awarded by the "Hungarian FilmLab" ("Magyar Filmlabor"), for the post-production of a next film project.
The award for best cinematography went to Vasco Viana for the Portuguese film "Mountain" by Joao Salaviza.

In the new program "SEE Camera" the award "Golden Manaki" went to the Turkish film"Sivas" directed by Kaan Mujdeci. Milos Srdic was named best cinematographer in this program for the film "The woods are still green".
The member of jury were: Maja Bogojevic- film critic, Diomides Nikita- producer and Miroslav Momcilovic - director. The cinematographer of the film "Down from Heaven" Goran Naumovski won the "Small Golden Camera 300" award.
The award was granted to him by Frosina Boshkova, in charge of sponsorships at Vip operator.
The audience also witnessed a few short films made by children during the festival, in the framework of the Vip Junior Program and “Giffoni Voyager”.
The festival’s director Dimitar Nikolov addressed the audience thanking all the attendees, the official partner Vip, the sponsors, the entire team, volunteers and guest stewards who gave their utmost to make a 10-day beautiful festival in Bitola.
-I will miss being without the festival a little in the next 360 days even though I will surely be involved in a different way. Thank you for the support, for everything you have done so that this festival would live up to its reputation and to advance by taking huge steps, to become something even bigger and something we will be proud of – said Nikolov.
The laureate Bozhidar-Bota Nikolc was granted the Lifetime Achievement Award “Golden Camera 300”. He said that he has been working on film for 47 years and that in the world there is no such place as Bitola where cinematographers are being stopped on the street to take a photo.
 - I wouldn’t want to sound pathetic but I rejoiced very much when the director of the festival told me that I was getting this award. However, I was also a bit saddened because still, this is a lifetime achievement award. Film is a collective art. Many people around me have helped me win this award and I would like to thank all of them. First of all, to my family for their patience, to the directors for the faith they put in me and I would be unfair if I didn’t thank my two assistants to whom I would like to say: “We’ve won an award” – said Bota Nikolic.

He received the award from the Mayor of Bitla, Vladimir Talevski. He congratulated Nikolic on the awards.
-As each film speaks of pain, passion, joy, love, fear, anxiety, so our festival knows about pain, love, passion and joy. I thank all of you as with your presence in the past 10 days you have shown and proven and we have all seen and lived a great truth, which is that the International Festival of Film Camera “Manaki Brothers” is the most important event in the domain of culture in the Republic of Macedonia. – said Talevski.
Nigel Waters, President of the European Federation of Cinematographers IMAGO granted the award to the laureate Jaromir Sofr.
He emphasized the importance of the festival for cinematographers as the oldest one in the world dedicated to them. Sofr showed his gratitude for the recognition and said:
-You are a truly friendly audience and I hope that you will watch films after me and that you will manage to see all my colleagues’ and friends’ quality films rightfully digitalized because it is a way for them to be preserved. Actually, with digitalization itself the instrument changes but the filmmakers’ and cinematographers’ art does not change and that is why I believe that they shall continue our tradition in future as well, will use the new technologies, but will also continue to be just as good cinematographers and we will watch just as great films.
The musician Goce Naumov performed at the ceremony, with the music and visual project “Mil-tone”, in which through videos from the Manaki brothers and through his original music he brought us back a century ago when the festival’s patrons worked.
In honor of the awards, the Taiwanese – Chinese film “ The Assassin” was screened.

Over 130 films from 28 countries to screen during 11-day event, which runs from Thursday, October 22 - Sunday, November 1, 2015

The Philadelphia Film Society is proud to announce the full film line-up of the 24th Philadelphia Film Festival, spanning from October 22 - November 1 on 6 theater screens throughout the Greater Philadelphia area.

Opening on October 22nd with Anomalisa and closing on October 30th with Where to Invade Next, the 11-day Philadelphia Film Festival will locally premiere over 130 feature length and short films, curated by our programming committee that travels to festivals around the world, all year long, to officially select each film in the program.

"I'm thrilled with this year's fantastic line-up of films, bringing so many incredible features and shorts from around the world to Philadelphia for our 24th edition," said Executive Director J. Andrew Greenblatt.  "From our Opening Night screening of the Venice Grand Prize winner Anomalisa to the Closing Night screening of master documentarian Michael Moore'sWhere to Invade Next, this year's slate is not only incredibly strong and diverse, but fully represents what a film festival truly is: the gathering of a community of film lovers experiencing some of the most exciting, challenging, innovative, prestigious and thought-provoking films of the year, with many of the artists behind these films in attendance."

"It's bursting at the seams!" said Michael Lerman, Artistic Director.  "With our biggest program in several years, we're very lucky to be showcasing a collection of work that is overstuffed with gems, featuring over twenty works from world renowned directors (including our bold and fantastic opening and closing night selections) along with plenty of great surprises from first timers."

The Philadelphia Film Society is honored that Michael Moore, the Academy-Award winning filmmaker and best-selling author behind Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine, will be joining  the #PFF24 Closing Night Celebration at the Prince Theater.

The full Festival schedule and digital Festival Program Guide is available now on

www.filmadelphia.org/festival.

Camerimage’s Special Editing Award will be presented to legendary editor Walter Murch

Camerimage’s Special Editing Award will be presented to legendary editor and multiple Academy Award® winner Walter Murch (Apocalypse Now, Ghost, The English Patient, The Godfather II and III, Gimme Shelter, Cold Mountain…)

WALTER MURCH WITH AWARD TO EDITOR!

Much has been said and written about the opening of Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now, but let us go back to it once more. It starts with a sound, difficult to recognize or place anywhere. Next, there appears an image – an almost-still shot of a jungle. The sound swells and, suddenly, a helicopter flies right before our eyes. It is time for the first accords of “The End” by The Doors that serve as both an accompaniment and commentary to what can be seen on the screen: smoke and flames start to devour the jungle. Another helicopter flies by, Jim Morrison's vocals appear, and the shot turns into a living napalm-induced hell, while the camera moves after the flying machines. This image of jungle-fever after an air raid serves as background to the superimposed shot of Captain Willard's (Martin Sheen) face, which gets interwoven in the seconds to come with shots of whirling helicopter's rotor and the jungle's conflagration, meaningfully displaying what happens in the soldier's mind. These first, intensively audiovisual, dialog-free minutes of Apocalypse Now convey the film's essence and foreshadow what is to come, it is no wonder, then, that this prologue is often cited as one of the best ever. And it was made largely by Walter Murch, the iconic editor and sound designer who, as we are exhilarated to announce, will come to Bydgoszcz in November to accept Camerimage Special Award.

Editing is not about gimmicky transitions from one scene to another, it deals with imbuing the given story with a rhythm and emotional tempo, while designing a film's soundtrack does not mean matching images to music and songs but creating a spatial soundscape that will make the world depicted on screen believable and tangible – Walter Murch is a true master of both these professions. It was he who made the otherworldly relationship between Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore in Jerry Zucker's Ghost suspenseful, emotional and poignant, while the film itself became one of the biggest hits of the 1990s. It was Murch's creativity and intuitiveness that supported the overall feeling of Anthony Minghella's Cold Mountain and made Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation the film that changed the way sound design was perceived. In THX 1138, George Lucas's debut feature, Murch created an encompassing sound space of all-too-real dystopian society, in Appocalypse Now he, Vittorio Storaro and other artists working on the film took the audiences on a journey into the Vietnam hell, and in Minghella's The English Patient he heightened the reality depicted on the screen. For his work on the latter movie Walter Murch received two Oscars®, for editing and sound design, which was an unprecedented achievement. He also won the Academy Award® for Best Sound in Apocalypse Now, and received six other Academy nominations.

Still from "Apocalypse Now"

Still from "The English Patient"

“A good editor must have some sense of how to tell a story, and that involves a sense of rhythm,” Murch explained in one of his interviews. “It's a little bit like telling a good joke. The joke could be a great joke but if you tell it with the wrong rhythm it falls flat.” These words seem to sum up perfectly the working ethos of Walter Murch, who fell in love with editing images and sounds as a teenager and since then decided to dedicate his professional life to developing both areas of cinematic craft, at the same time strongly opposing the empty virtuosity often seen in the film industry. Murch was very lucky, during his studies he met and collaborated with a group of film enthusiasts who helped each other fully master their skills and to try new and exciting things – directors George Lucas and John Milius, and cinematographer/director Caleb Deschanel, among others. What is more, Murch took his first real career steps with Francis Ford Coppola on his The Rain People and then on the legendary films The Godfather and The Conversation. Murch was also one of the creators of the 5.1 surround sound system in cinemas, and he is the only film editor who has been nominated for Academy Awards® for his work on four different editing systems: Moviola (Fred Zinneman's Julia), KEM (Coppola's Apocalypse Now), Avid (Minghella's The English Patient), Final Cut Pro (Minghella's Cold Mountain).

Walter Murch is a true Renaissance Man, an artist who worked in various areas of the film industry. In 1985 he made his directing feature debut with Return to Oz. He co-wrote the screenplay to THX 1138 with George Lucas. He worked as a camera operator on the legendary concert documentary Gimme Shelter by the Maysles brothers – and it was he who took, with 1000mm lenses, the now-famous final shot of a peeing silhouetted man. Murch has also written a book about his craft: “In the Blink of an Eye: A Perspective on Film Editing”, which is now a part of many film schools' curricula. Among many professional challenges he took, one should mention the use of detailed Orson Welles' memos in remixing and re-editing the famously studio-distorted Touch of Evil, helping the film reclaiming its status as a masterpiece of American cinema. Murch indefatigably promotes his ethos of editor and sound designer as a collaborator who helps directors and other filmmakers to shape their stories out of the chaos of the materials shot on set.

We are deeply honored that Walter Murch accepted our invitation and will come to Bydgoszcz to take part in the 23rd edition of the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography CAMERIMAGE. Not only to receive the Special Award to Editor with Unique Visual Sensitivity, but also to meet the festival's participants and talk about his experiences and immense knowledge.

23rd Camerimage will be held in Bydgoszcz

After five festival days and nights at Cineplex Münster, more than one hundred films, numerous premiers in thedifferent sections, as well as exciting conversations and encounters, the award winners of the 16th Filmfestival Münster are finally certain.

The award for Best Directing in the European Feature Film Competition (endowed with €5,000) is granted to the filmmaker Micah Magee for her feature film debut „Petting Zoo“. The portrait of a young woman who is stuck between self determination and a bigoted home, is influenced by the director’s autobiography and is told sensitively. It convinced by its coherent cinematic concept that reveals an exceptional directing talent, as the jury, consisting of Christine Haupt, Florian Gottschick, Luna Zimic Mijovic and Thure Lindhardt, explained. The graduate of the German Film and Television Academy Berlin was already featured at Filmfestival Münster. In 2013, her short film „Heimkommen“ was screened there. „Petting Zoo“, a German, Greek and US American coproduction, is Micah Magee’s first feature film.

In the Short Film Competition with German, Austrian and Swiss submissions, the award winners received prizes that are worth €7,000. The Grand Prix of the Filmwerkstatt (endowed with €3,000) goes in equal parts to the 30-minute documentary „Vorwärtsgang“ by Daniel Abma and the short feature film „Abseits der Autobahn“ by the Swiss filmmaker Rhona Mühlebach in equal shares.

The jury members Oona von Maydell, Maximilian Scheidt and Hella Wenders awarded„Vorwärtsgang“ the prize since the graduate of Film UniversityPotsdam-Babelsberg shows a sensitive long-term observation of a social rehabilitation – a well-made portrait of a person forgotten by society.

The short feature film „Abseits der Autobahn“ by the 25-year-old director Rhona Mühlebach shows control mania, lapse, the wish for change and stagnation of the two lovingly created protagonists. This is conveyed by atmospheric images and lots of humour.

Furthermore,  the bizarre comedy „Die Ballade von Ella Plummhoff“ by KHM student Barbara Kronenberg received a special mention.

„Alles wird gut“ by Patrick Vollrath was awarded with the award for up-and-coming filmmakers (endowed with €3,000) by WDR Studio Münster. The film by graduates of the Viennese Film Academy was premiered in the short film competition of the „Semaine de la Critique“ in Cannes and was recently honored with the Student Academy Award.

The Audience Award (endowed with €1,000) of the Short Film Competition, sponsored by the Münstersche Filmtheater-Betriebe, goes to the bittersweet, pleasure-loving and sparking tragicomedy „Forever Over“ by Erik Schmitt. The filmmaker was born in 1980 and has already participated in the Short Film Competition of Filmfestival Münster in 2011(„Nun sehen Sie Folgendes“) and in 2013 („Nashorn im Galopp“).

In the section „Westphalia Connection“, the Audience Award winner originally comes from Hamm: Nina Mielitz and her film „Was wisst ihr denn eigentlich schon davon?“ impressed the audience the most. Nina Mielitz has won a flight for two persons within Europe, sponsored by Deutsche Lufthansa AG.

This engaging documenary gets a behind the scenes look on the life of many character actresses as well as the students she teaches.

Songs My Brothers Taught Me / USA (Chloé Zhao) - Set against the beautiful backdrop of South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, this meditative drama follows a teenaged brother and sister as they summon the strength and grace to face upheavals in their family life and work through ambivalence about how and where to make a life for themselves.

Tired Moonlight / USA (Britni West) - Britni West wrote, directed, produced, and edited her acclaimed narrative debut, which rests on an innovative combination of seeming  and dreamscape. Tired Moonlight sets overlapping story lines about people trying to make their lives work, if only for a short time, against a stunning Montana backdrop.

A Woman Like Me / USA (Alex Sichel, Elizabeth Giamatti) - Through a heartbreaking yet playfully inspiring combination of documentary and fiction, writer/director Alex Sichel simultaneously chronicles her treatment for terminal cancer, her filmmaking process, and her approach to life and death, exploring both what might have been and what will surely be (with the ever-watchable Lili Taylor as her double).

Yosemite / USA (Gabrielle Demeestere) - Three interconnected stories by co-star James Franco form the basis for this engaging tale of three boys in suburban California circa 1985. As the world changes around them and the end of innocence nears, each must find a way to make sense of his experiences and connections to others.

"The Martian" or Matt Damon stranded on Mars

Afficher l'image d'origine

by Alex Deleon, stranded in Hungary

Viewed October 09, in 3D at Cineplex, Györ, in dubbed Hungarian version. Director, Ridley Scott, RT 141 minutes. A Twentieth Century Fox release.

SITUATION: The not too distant future where planet Mars has not only been reached from Earth but where NASA has already set up a more or less permanent Space Station from which the surface of the red planet is being explored for potential colonization by refugees from Earth. A gigantic sandstorm comes up and the exploratory NASA spaceship has to blast off to escape while they can. In the storm one of the crew is lost and left behind for dead -- the indestructible Eathling, Mark Watley (Matt Damon) -- when it us found that he has survived a deperate rescue mission is organized

To Bring him back Alive ...

Well ...

To start with, the Hungarian title "Mentőexpedició" (Rescue Mission) is far more apt than the misleading cheapshot American  originial "The Martian" -- which might lead one to suspect that this is a picture about Red blooded Aliens from the Red Planet when, in fact, this is Reality Sci-fi and, let's  face it; Matt Damon is as purely down-to-earth American as the all American boy Jack Armstrong -- and equally red-blooded, as we shall see in an early scene where Matt, with professional surgical dexterity, deftly (and painfully) removes a heavy metal shard embedded in his side during the furious Martian sandstorm that opened the picture and left him stranded there for the next two hours. Brain surgery self-taught?

Well, heck ~ wasn't Matt a self-taught PhD mathematician in "Good Will Hunting" (1997), so, why not a skillful self-taught surgeon eighteen years later?

To add to the other-worldliness, the picture was filmed entirely in Hungary, in and around Budapest, except for  the outdoor Martian landscapes which were filmed in the other worldly deserts of Jordan right here on Earth.

The new ultramodern Budapest Music Center "MuPa" on the Danube served as the location for the Chinese Space Ministry in Peking, and the plaza out front for the Square in Beijing where Chinese throngs cheer the Rescue mission on before a worldwide TV hookup. Also for the interiors of the NASA command center in Houston. All the other spaceship and astro-interior scenes were shot at the state-of-the-art KORDA studios just outside of Budapest.

Wouldn't Stanley Kubrik be jealous if he were around today to see such facilities available for such Megascale screen fireworks? -- and what would thus film have looked like if Kubrick had made it ...

Now, don't get me wrong ~~ I am not knocking the picture itself, which I enjoyed thoroughly in 3D at a state of the art Hungarian cineplex -- even dubbed into Hungarian which didn't matter much in a movie where the dialog is secondary, and may even have muttered out some of the incidental trivial chitchat back at NSA HQ, inserted to make the product more palatable to the Sitcom trained masses.

Damon was endearing as a stranded space age All-American astronaut and is being pipped for Oscaramity 2016 -- but any other competent actor (e.g., Cruise, Depp, Denzil, Pitt) could have done as well given the one dimensional material -- not to knock Matt who is gaining versatility with maturity.

Fantastic special effects with that special Ridley Scott large-scale touch (Think, Blade Runner, 1972, or ALIEN, 1979) and credible (if not 100 % accurate) scientific detailing on space travel, some interesting side roles back on Earth, and a subtle call for more cooperation with Red China, coupled with the sneaky feeling that, at the rate we are currently destroying our own planet, we better find another one pretty soon, Mars being our current best bet -- make this movie a winner from stem to stern, given the usual suspension of belief when viewing such an epic piece of wishful thinking.

Think again  -- already, if you have the bucks -- you can sign up for a privately funded Earth orbiting tour.  Can The Moon or Mars be that far off ...

Alex,

Györ, Hungary
