DECRYPTION: CAN YOU LAUGH AT EVERYTHING?
Laughter is a uniquely human feature but to what extent are we free to exercise it? Sarcastic, emblematic and unusual comedies will, along with the documentary Caricaturistes, fantassins de la démocratie, remind us that humour is an indispensable critical tool.
GENRE CINEMA: TERRA EROTICA I
Celebrating desire in a poetic and light-hearted way through the most lyrical and unsettling interpretations of erotic cinema from Russia, South Korea, and Brazil (Terra Erotica I). Terra Erotica I? Indeed. An even more outrageous selection, Terra Erotica II, will be presented at the 15th NIFFF from July 3-11, 2015.
DIASPORA: TONY GATLIF AND THE ROMA
Tony Gatlif's beloved culture will be explored throughout five films programmed by the director himself.
TERRA INCOGNITA: INDIGENOUS NORTH AMERICAN CINEMA
With nearly 20 films, this will be the most important programme outside of North America ever devoted to the Indigenous people of Canada and the United States with the aim of casting light on a rebellious cinema that has only recently begun to take its revenge on the stereotypes of the American Western.
HOMMAGE A...: SYRIA, BY OSSAMA MOHAMMED
Acclaimed Silvered Water, Syria Self-portrait Syrian director Ossamma Mohamed has agreed to run the Hommage à...: Syria, by Ossama Mohammed section by choosing documentaries that paint a portrait of his battered country. Be prepared for an excruciating journey.
SUR LA CARTE DE JEAN-FRANÇOIS STÉVENIN
The 29th FIFF is delighted to offer the public an eclectic series of favourites chosen by free spirited actor and director Jean-François Stévenin.
EXHIBITIONS AND DEBATES: BEYOND THE SCREEN
Music will play its part with a concert at La Spirale in conjunction with Diaspora: Tony Gatlif and the Roma (03.27.2015), an event at the Soussol dedicated to the Hommage à...: Syria, by Ossama Mohammed (03.26.2015) and another evening at the Fri-son around Terra Incognita: North American Indigenous Cinema. Three exhibitions are also programmed: the Canton and University Library will play host to the photographs of the Roma by Yves Leresche (date of private viewing. Fri-Art, the unmissable Fribourg Arts Centre, has joined forces with FIFF for the first time, with the works of Americans Robert Heinecken (02.26.2015) and Larry Clark (03.20.2015) adding a first-class critical perspective to Terra Erotica I.
